No Microbeads in our Facial Scrubs

A big step forward has been made in the fight against plastic pollution in our oceans. The UK government has announced that it fully supports a ban on plastic microbeads in cosmetics.

Microbeads are plastic particles smaller than 5mm. They are used in cosmetics, including toothpaste. Manufacturers use them because the beads can be manufactured to uniform degrees of size and hardness.

Microbead Free Facial Scrubs

"Manuka Doctor Facial Scrubs have never contained plastic microbeads"

Previously the government had rejected a ban on microbeads, favouring a voluntary approach from individual brands. But growing pressure has resulted in the government admitting that a ban is the right way forward.

The committee chair, Mary Creagh, said: "Trillions of tiny pieces of plastic are accumulating in the world’s oceans, lakes and estuaries, harming marine life and entering the food chain. A single shower can result in 100,000 plastic particles entering the ocean."

Manuka Doctor has never used plastic microbeads in any of its products. Both facial scrubs – our Purifying Facial Scrub and Polishing Facial Exfoliator - are ocean friendly and microbead free.

In our Facial Scrubs we use naturally derived biodegradable scrub particles such as bamboo, which are used to give fantastic exfoliating effects for smoother, more radiant skin.

"I am currently loving all things Manuka Doctor. My skin really reacts well to the antibacterial and nourishing properties of Manuka Honey. This particular scrub brightens, resurfaces and refines the skin, while not drying it out." Camille, On a Beauty Bender Blog

MPs have now demanded that a worldwide ban in cosmetics should be imposed as soon as possible. The Environmental Audit Committee says the tiny balls of plastic used in shower gels and facial scrubs can even be found in Arctic sea-ice and on the ocean floor.

Microplastic pollution is potentially more environmentally damaging than larger plastic waste, because it is more likely to be eaten by wildlife. Microplastics also have a greater surface area to attract toxins.

"I then realised my Manuka Doctor ApiClear Purifying Face Scrub contains none of those nasty beads and uses natural bamboo stem particles to give the exfoliating effect. I was so happy and relieved because I had just purchased this on sale and was loving it so far. It also contains Purified Bee Venom, Manuka Honey and other powerful botanical extracts, perfect for my sensitive blemish prone skin." Ashleigh, A Gal’s Life Blog

Here at Manuka Doctor we are strive to offer the best performing skincare inspired by the hive and we are proud to not use microbeads in any of our products and still produce high performing skincare products.
