We are enormously proud to report that all Manuka Doctor’s honey sold in the USA is approved by the Non-GMO Project, North America’s third-party verification scheme for non-GMO foods.
What is GMO?
Genetic modification affects many of the foods we consume on a daily basis.
GMO stands for genetically modified organisms, meaning something which has had its genetic makeup modified in a laboratory using genetic engineering or transgenic technology.
As the number of GMOs available for commercial use grew every year, the Non-GMO Project was set up to provide the most accurate, up-to-date standards for non-GMO verification and help consumers choose true “Non-GMO” natural products.
What do I need to look for, to ensure my Manuka honey is Non-GMO?
The Non-GMO Project has a special Verified Logo, which assures consumers that the product bearing the label has been evaluated. All Manuka Doctor products sold in America now carry this special logo on the front of the pack.
What tests do Manuka Doctor do to prove their honey is Non-GMO?
Manuka honey is one of the most tested food stuffs in the world.
All Manuka Doctor honey harvested and packed in New Zealand and independently lab tested to check its MGO grade. It must also pass a set of stringent tests set by the New Zealand Government that legally defines what is Manuka honey. These checks (also called the Ministry of Primary Industry Manuka Honey Definition Standard) classify every batch of Manuka we sell as either MultiFloral or MonoFloral, with tests undertaken for 4 naturally occurring chemical markers, and a DNA test to prove the honey is the real deal.
Our Non-GMO Project Verification is another layer of validation on top of this.
In order to use the Non-GMO logo, Manuka Doctor’s honey has to be comprehensively evaluated by an independent party. A Technical Administrator evaluates our products to determine if they are compliant with the organisation’s standards. While Independent inspectors and testing laboratories are also part of this same verification process.
